My Thoughts On Tegan & Sara and Katy Perry

Recently, there have been some events on the Internet, especially on Twitter, that have been disturbing me lately. So I have decided to write a post filtering my feelings about it.

It all started with a post that Perez Hilton wrote, comparing Tegan and Sara's new album, "Heartthrob" with Katy Perry's music which really upset me. Tegan and Sara ARE one of my favorite bands of all time, and I was never a fan of Katy Perry, but the comparison baffled me. Pushing aside my opinions about the musicians, trying to relate the two artists work to each other, it just doesn't make sense to me. Tegan and Sara are an Indie Rock band that have now added a more pop side to their music, but it doesn't, by any means, compare to Katy Perry's music. Not at all.

But what really upsets me is the fact that when Katy Perry tweeted about "her new favorite song by her new favorite band", Tegan and Sara actually retweeted it. But that alone isn't the whole story. Perry has this song entitled, "Ur So Gay" which is horribly offensive to the LGBT community. I realize that this song was apparently written for a metrosexual boyfriend she's had in the past, but to throw the word "Gay" around like that... It's so offensive.

The lyrics:

"Ur So Gay"

"[Verse 1]
"I hope you hang yourself with your H&M scarf
While jacking off listening to Mozart
You bitch and moan about LA
Wishing you were in the rain reading Hemingway
You don’t eat meat
And drive electrical cars
You’re so indie rock it’s almost an art
You need SPF 45 just to stay alive

[CHORUS]
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like boys
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like…

[Verse 2]
You’re so sad maybe you should buy a happy meal
You’re so skinny you should really Super Size the deal
Secretly you’re so amused
That nobody understands you
I’m so mean cause I cannot get you outta your head
I’m so angry cause you’d rather MySpace instead
I can’t believe I fell in love with someone that wears more makeup than…

[CHORUS]
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like boys
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like…

[BRIDGE]
You walk around like you’re oh so debonair
You pull ‘em down and there’s really nothing there
I wish you would just be real with me

[CHORUS]
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like boys
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like
Oh no no no no no no no
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like boys
You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like
No you don’t even like…
PENIS"

From reading the lyrics and not knowing what the song is really about, you would assume that it is persuading an Indie Rock lesbian to hang herself. No matter how you interpret this song, it's still offensive. (Isn't it rather ironic how Tegan and Sara Quin are both Indie Rock lesbians?!)

My statement doesn't end here. Remember a rap artist by the name of Tyler The Creator? He was obscenely homophobic and guess who stood up to him. Tegan. And. Sara. That's right. Whenever they come across someone who appears to be homophobic, they always stand up for themselves. It's very disappointing to see that Tegan and Sara are supporting an artist like Katy Perry who has such a homophobic song.

And also, when Daniel Tosh not only wore their T-Shirt on his show, but SUNG "Nineteen" and even tweeted about them, they said nothing about it. I really do not get what is up. They usually are thrilled when people like that support them. For example, when Tim Armstrong of Rancid wore their T-Shirt, they were over the moon. As loyal Tegan and Sara fans, we are so happy when something like this happens, when someone who has more fame then our girls is supporting them by wearing a T-Shirt with their faces on it, but I just can't feel the same excitment when it's Katy Perry.

I don't expect you to feel the same way that I'm feeling, but I needed to say something about this. It doesn't feel well to bottle in your feelings.

"It's all fun and gay until someone loses their rights."

  1. I was just reading Sara's open letter to Tyler a few hours ago. It's been a while since I read it..you should go back and visit it..I will always remember how proud I was of her for writing that. A very similar letter could be/should be written to Perry by someone. I'm sick of people defending it because she has some gay friends. Replace the word gay to "black" and defend it because she has some black friends..it just wouldn't be the same. The whole thing makes me very sad.. :( I was trying to find more on it this morning and ran across another blog, you should check it out bc hardly anyone else did. http://fandmwomenscenter.blogspot.com/2013/01/should-lgbtq-community-honor-katy-perry.html

  2. First of all, "Ur So Gay" is about a very metrosexual man who acts like a woman, it is in no way about a man or woman who is gay. Moreover Katy in NOT a homophobe, and you're inadvertently giving her the hateful title in your blog post. The similarities between Katy and Tegan & Sara are stronger than you think: if you listen to Katy's older music or even her non-single tracks, you'd see that. Besides, Tegan & Sara's new music is much more dance or electronic than anything in Katy Perry's discography... You're an awesome blogger and I am a fan, but please do your research!
